This article would give you a brief about Gynecomastia and why gynecomastia gives unsatisfactory results sometimes or why Gynecomastia surgery has bad results
What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia is the aggregation of fat over the chest area in males. A gyno chest is softer than a normal chest. Patients might also feel a solid lump beneath the skin which is not fat in the chest region.
Gynecomastia surgery is a male breast reduction surgery that focuses on reducing the enlarged breast to its proper shape. In some males, the gynecomastia develops so much that a drooping breast appears and a breast lift is even required.
Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) is a procedure that aims to correct enlarged male breasts.

Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?
A good candidate for gynecomastia surgery is one whose chest feels saggy. The patient feels uncomfortable. There are a number of symptoms that arise for screening which are a rounded chest, puffy nipples, and a sagging chest.
The lack of confidence and feeling ashamed of tightened nipples are other symptoms that make an individual a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery. Before this, after going shirtless, one might feel conscious which prevents him from being confident.
What Are the Different Grades in Gynecomastia Surgery?
There are three grades divided in a gynecomastia surgery in which every division is categorized on the degree of treatment it requires. A puffy nipple is also considered under this categorization.
The entire procedure is done which includes operating on a few glands, blood vessels, and nerves. Due to the consumption of certain medications and drugs, a gathering of excess fat over the chest regions is usually seen.
The three grades of gynecomastia include the mild, moderate, and severe types. The mild type is Grade 1 has a bit of roundness and the nipple is enlarged. Grade 1 usually has larger glands than normal.
Grade 2 depicts a bit of a feminine look, the amount of fat and glands are more than Grade 1. These cases are mostly found in bodybuilders and athletes who take supplements and steroids. Grade 2 is most common among men i.e. approximately three-fourths of the patients are categorized into Grade 2. This grade includes treatment of both gland and fat.
Then, there is Grade 3 Gynecomastia which is very uncommon and rare, appearing like a female breast. The treatment includes the procedure in which skin has to be removed along with the gland and fat of the chest region.
What Procedure Should Be Followed?
The procedure of gynecomastia treatment has several stages. The first stage includes injecting saline water which loosens the fat cells. The second stage includes extracting the fat with the help of a liposuction procedure through a minor cut which is almost invisible.
The third stage involves removing the gland beneath the nipple involving a minor cut which also becomes invisible within a month. It should be noted that ten percent of the gland must be there which allows the nipple to settle.
Less experienced plastic surgeons often make the mistake of removing the whole gland which results in the embedment of the nipple. The nipple looks inappropriate and abnormal leading to unsatisfactory results. A final stitch is done at the end of the procedure.
What is Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery Like?
The recovery in all the grades is the same, including a single day of rest, and the following day the patient can carry on his work. A week of exertion must be avoided over the chest region which includes gym exercises, driving, and lifting heavy objects.
The pain is mild during the first week and can be easily reduced by following the medications prescribed by the doctor. Post-surgery swelling reduces within 1-2 days after the surgery.
A bit of soreness and discomfort may be seen for a few days to heal the incisions. For best results, consider wearing a compression vest for a couple of weeks which lowers the risks of complications and improves results.
High-Intensity movements like aerobics and weight training can be performed comfortably after 5-7 weeks with a follow-up visit from the consulted doctor.
Possible Complications and Why Patients are unhappy with the results?
Why gynecomastia gives unsatisfactory results
Unlike the chest fat, there is a development of the male breast which consists of excess fat and gland development. There are many problems which can lead to unsatisfied patients and the list may seem to be very long if the following complications are not taken into consideration.
- Infection – if the stitches are not stitched properly, an infection may take place.
- Seroma – accumulation of fluid leading to the formation of a lump.
- Asymmetry – an imbalance between the pecs may be seen after some time.
- Bleeding – due to excessive cuts, there may be a possibility of bleeding.
- Hematoma – is a type of swelling caused by clotted blood which can be painful
- Loss of nipple sensation – when glands are fully removed, nipples gets embedded.
- Consistent pain – unqualified doctors usually make this mistake while performing surgery.
- Scarring – improper incisions and cuts often lead to scarring.
It should be noted that all these possibilities of problems can be minimized or even completely gone if the plastic surgeon is board-certified, well qualified, and has good experience in performing gynecomastia treatment.
Before the operation, the patient must be open and discuss any issues faced by the patient in the past as a thorough background check plays a vital role.
